Lettuce Look at the Green Team!

We are so proud of our Conservation Corps Green Team! They have been giving presentations about their summer activities and have they ever been busy!  Thanks to the continued successful partnership with Kings Gate Condominium (KGC), the team operates out of the garden in front of the Condo building and have made it into a lovely and reflective place to sit and enjoy the beauty of nature.  Green Team members have also been busy continuing to build and sell garden boxes, including accessible ones for people with limited mobility.

Partnerships was a key theme this year! Students at Brother Rice put together a garden map for the team which outlined all of the garden boxes and their owners. All Stella’s Circle programs, some condo owners and Eastern Health’s ACT team took ownership of garden boxes and have been busy harvesting their results!

Memorial University’s Botanical Garden provided a composting session to the group and the group has now introduced composting into the garden.

Participants of our Just Us Women’s Centre painted rocks and put them around the garden.

And for the first time, the group also prepared and planted in three garden boxes at Government House!

During presentations, team members spoke about the importance of food security, the impact of climate change and the issue of food wastage. They also spoke about feeling very proud of building a second greenhouse together and the importance of working together.

And everyone is very proud that the produce is being enjoyed by participants and will also be served at our Hungry Heart Cafe! This week, the group hosted a BBQ at KGC and served salad made from ingredients they grew!
